About Your Host, Deanna Speir
My husband Gordon and I lost our 26-year-old son, Joe, to anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa in 2015. There was literally nowhere to take him for treatment in our area. We were told that Joe couldn’t have anorexia nervosa because it was a ‘girl’s disease.’
Since his loss, Gordon and I have become strong advocates. We do not want to see one more family lose a loved one or see one more family without access to local support.
We are determined to raise awareness of eating disorders, erase the stigma, create conversation, promote positive body image, educate the medical community, as well as attract high quality eating disorder treatment centers to our local area (that treat all genders).”
About The Alliance Mid-Atlantic
In early 2019, Deanna and her fearless coalition joined as an official affiliate under The Alliance. Together they were able to educate over 70 professionals on eating disorders for the first time in the Mid-Atlantic community's history. They were also able to welcome hundreds to the University of Delaware campus to create awareness, and more importantly CREATE CHANGE in our community.
The funds raised at our Alliance fundraisers remain in our community to fund a free-clinician led support group.
Deanna comments, "Joining The Alliance has placed our community on the fast track for the resources desperately needed to support all those affected by eating disorders."
